Christian Couple Sentenced to Five Years Highlights Misuse of Religious Legislation
January 25, 2025
Ecclesia United International expresses deep concern over the recent conviction and sentencing of Pastor Jose Pappachan and his wife, Sheeja Pappachan, in Uttar Pradesh, India. The couple was sentenced to five years in prison under the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act. This is the first conviction under this law, which has been widely criticized for its potential to target religious minorities and suppress legitimate religious expression.
The couple originally from Kerala’s Pathanamthitta district, were accused of attempting to convert individuals from marginalized Dalit and tribal communities. Despite their assertion that their work was focused on social welfare, they were convicted by a special court in Ambedkar Nagar district. In addition to the prison sentence, the couple was fined ₹25,000 (approximately $300) each.
Impact of Anti-Conversion Laws
The Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, enacted in 2021 and amended in 2024, includes severe penalties, including life imprisonment for certain violations. Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state, has recorded the highest number of anti-Christian incidents in the country, with at least 70 Christians currently imprisoned under this law. These figures highlight the disproportionate targeting of religious minorities and raise serious concerns over the misuse of the legislation.
Appeal for International Intervention
Ecclesia United International calls on the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) to intervene and address this alarming situation. The conviction of the Pappachans is a stark reminder of the erosion of religious freedom in India. We urge the international community to advocate for the protection of minority rights and to ensure that laws are not weaponized against vulnerable communities.
The Pappachan case is not just about one couple but represents a broader pattern of repression that undermines the democratic values India has long stood for. Ecclesia United International will continue to monitor this case closely and stand in solidarity with those advocating for justice and religious freedom.
